Starting this week, you are going to be teased with photos of two musicians – one much bigger than the other – and media reports that they are dating. They are not. It’s all a public relations strategy. Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes: She wants to make the move from pop to more indie-sounding music. In order to get that kind of credibility, she needs to roughen up her image. Not a lot. Just a little. Dating a bad boy would be a quick way for her to get there…. but her team knows that it would hurt her reputation and possibly alienate her existing fan base. That would be a HUGE mistake. So how can they get her to LOOK more edgy without actually BEING edgy? Have her PRETEND that she’s dating a bad boy! Now, this will NOT be a faux romance like the ones you’ve seen from her in the past. You are NOT going to see them strolling through Central Park, holding hands, and sipping lattes. And you are definitely NOT going to see them making out, doing shots, and getting tattoos together! No, you are just going to see them supporting each other’s work, maybe talking about a collaboration, and visiting each other or occasionally getting caught in the same place at the same time. The professional/personal line will be intentionally blurred. You are going to assume this means that they are dating. We call this a Fill In The Blank Strategy. You won’t actually SEE anything. You will just THINK you know what’s going on based on the surrounding events. And your perception of her will change based on this. There is no formal contract… yet. They are simply going to both work the tease from now through New Year’s. He’s kind of a wild card, so if it works out well and he doesn’t act like a jerk or do anything dumb (like get caught doing coke or making out with another girl), there will be a contract that will last through the start of her tour next year. We love good P.R. strategies, and this is actually quite a clever little plan. He gets a big boost in his visibility, she gets to roughen up her image just a little bit, and nobody has to get their hands dirty! Meanwhile, both of their fan bases will go crazy with speculation for the entire duration of the faux relationship… leading right up to her next concert tour. And of course she’ll get a song out of it and big tour sales. Perfect.

She is going to go to his performance TONIGHT. She will be highly visible and there will be lots of "eyewitness" reports tomorrow about seeing them, how cute they are together, and what a great couple they make. There will be only one or two leaked photos that will spread like wildfire all over social media tomorrow. They won’t show much. No kissing or holding hands. Whenever you see a group of celebrities of various ages and genres get together for anything other than an official reason (e.g. a major awards show) you are right to suspect that something beyond pure friendship is at play. In the case of this group of celebrities, it’s business. They are talking about teaming up in a surprising new venture that will leave some of their old allies in the lurch… and will greatly benefit themselves financially. It’s difficult for celebrities to find people to trust, so some either surround themselves with staff and party friends, or forgo friendships altogether. This female singer has done an admirable job of building up a group of loyal female friends. That’s why it is interesting that she is making some "friendship adjustments" for the new year. If your being around her stirs up controversy – or if you are embroiled in a controversy of your own that has nothing to do with her – you are going to get a bit of the cold shoulder this year. Now, she won’t cut you out entirely, because that would create its own controversy. Instead, you are going to find yourself downgraded from "BFF" to "F". You are not going to get mentioned as much by her on social media; and you’re not going to spend as much time with her at public events; and you’re not going to be photographed as much with her. Basically, you either reflect her clean reputation and make her look good… or she’s going to give you some space. It’s not punishment. It’s self-preservation.

This girl practically lives to have every aspect of her life, every outfit, every vacation, and every fake date splashed across the internet. And, since she is a publicity hound, even crises are seen as opportunities for more publicity. That’s what’s going on right now. In the face of a minor mishap, she is publicly pretending that she is strong and nonplussed… while simultaneously having her team leak rumors about how she is actually so distressed and frightened that she may leave social media. Both of those messages were crafted by her team. The former reinforces her image with fans, while the second creates more drama. Oh, you are so sneaky, Splash Girl! And your PR team is worth every penny you pay them! Of course, Splash Girl will never, ever give up social media. And, if she really wanted to resolve the crisis, she could simply regularly change the passwords on her accounts to something that doesn’t include her cat’s name or a meaningful date. But she wouldn’t get any publicity for that, now, would she?

The Super Bowl has barely finished and there is already chatter about who next year’s main performer will be. We found out that there are already talks being held, and that there are three factors that are standing in one singer’s way. The first is that the Super Bowl gig requires months and months of preparation. Our singer is on tour this year. The second is that the producers want someone with broad audience appeal. One of the criticisms they received about Katy Perry was that the Super Bowl audience was not the same as her fan base. Our singer’s fan base has those same challenges. The third is that while Katy Perry’s fan base skews young, she had several big "anthem" songs which lent themselves well to sporting events (Roar, Firework). Our singer does not currently have any song like that. Our singer is impatient. She wants the gig NOW. However, we don’t know how she will manage the schedule, so that alone may force her to wait until 2017. In the meantime, though, look for her to broaden her fan base and come out with at least one big anthem in the next year that includes lyrics of power/victory/winning/teamwork/whatever. "We need a one or two songs that will totally cross gender and age lines. Definitely pop/rock with a heavy beat and a compelling hook. Something that everybody at a football game or a bar or a frat party will all feel good shouting." Guess it probably won’t include the word "boyfriend."

GRAMMYS: This very popular singer – who was at the Grammys last night – was actively trying to smooth over some rough relationships in the after-party scene. However, we found out that she isn’t doing it simply to be the nicer or bigger person. She and her friends read Sun Tzu and The 48 Laws of Power a couple of months ago. Since then, she has been pulling her former "enemies" and the friends of her enemies over to her side in the hopes of building an army of collaborators and supporters. The top person on her list? Another popular female singer with whom she has an icy relationship. She is working some common contacts to gain some insight into how to privately get through to her. She knows that a collaboration between them would shock everyone and would likely be a huge success given their respective fan bases. There is nothing our singer does that isn’t strategic.

There were plenty of stars gathered in London for the BRIT Awards… but not everyone was getting along! This performer has a lot of model friends.
